Day 20 - Guymon, OK to Liberal, KS - 45 miles - No climbing - 2:53 hours in the saddle
A short day of riding ahead allowed for an 8:30 start (an hour later than usual). Fortunately the overnight thunderstorms had cleared out and we had a cool morning to ride. Here is our typical scenery for today. We are seeing more communities grouped around the local grain elevators that dot the landscape.
Our one SAG today was at the Hooker, OK Chamber of Commence. They had a lot of merchandise for sale playing off the town name. I generally like to get at least 30 miles down the road before the first SAG, but with a short day, SAG came early. The skies appeared to be threatening rain, but Tom assured me we would be fine (and we were).
Next stop, the state line. We entered our 6th state, Kansas.
Once we hit Liberal, I made a quick excursion to the Land of Oz exhibition, which was a little kitschy. But at least I got a pic with a live Dorothy (who knew Dorothy had a nose ring) and a Tin Man statue.
Instead of celebrating Madri Gras the day before Lent, Liberal celebrates Pancake Day with Pancake Races pitting Liberal against Olney, England. I visited the International Pancake Day - Hall of Fame, but it was closed. Thanks to Joe Daume for this exciting tourist tip, keep them coming!
